Anger during divorce may have both positive and negative effects

The process of getting divorced in New York can be financially devastating, no matter what a person's income level. However, it can be especially difficult from an emotional standpoint. Unfortunately, when a person is angry in the midst of divorce proceedings, he or she is more likely to make irrational decisions that may have long-term negative consequences.

It may seem natural for a person going through divorce to immediately want to get even with his or her soon-to-be ex-spouse. For instance, the individual may threaten to fight for the children and never to let the other party see the children again. In addition, a person may threaten to get rid of all of the money he or she has just to prevent the other person from getting a dime of it.

Anger certainly has its place during the divorce process and can even be healthy. For example, a person who is angry is more motivated to assert himself or herself in a difficult situation. However, the more a person can overcome anger, the more effectively he or she can work toward a mutually satisfactory resolution with the other party.

If two people going through a New York divorce are able to find common ground, they may be able to reach a settlement without further court intrusion. This can be less stressful for the entire family, especially if children are involved, which can also be helpful for divorcing individuals who will have to be co-parents in the year ahead. An experienced family law attorney can help fight for the client's best interests while working toward achieving a mutually satisfactory settlement.
